Geoffrey Firmin is a former-British Consul living in the Mexican town of Quauhnahuac. His wife Yvonne left him a year before and all he now has left is himself and his alcohol. On the morning of the Day of the Dead, Yvonne returns unexpectedly and the two try to make things work again. Both carry old wounds though, and both want different things out of life. Under the Volcano explores what happens when humanity wastes its potential. Firmin knows he can do better, but paradoxically enjoys the comforts of his selfish lifestyle too much to move on with his life. “I love hell,” he claims. “I can’t wait to get back there. In fact I’m running, I’m almost back there already.” The tragedy of Under the Volcano is not that its characters suffer, but that they choose to not make the sacrifices that would end their suffering.
