Onodera Punpun is an elementary school student who never talks and never dreams. His father is a deadbeat and his mother is an alcoholic that wishes he was not around. Also, Punpun and his family look like birds in a world of humans. Punpun’s life comprises insane adults, a man in an afro who claims to be a ‘god’, and moments that are filled with surrealism and realism. The only thing Punpun has in his life is Aiko Tanaka, the girl of his dreams. Aiko and Punpun are not happy and make a promise to each other to run away to Kagoshima and start a new life together. Goodnight Punpun begins as a slice-of-life comedy that slowly darkens into a tragic coming-of-age story. The hard parts of growing up define Punpun’s story and along with providing a harsh but rewarding experience rivaled by very few mangas.
