Dr. Kenzo Tenma is a brilliant surgeon who is beloved by the hospital’s director and is even engaged to his beautiful daughter. Yet his hospital’s bias towards primarily helping wealthy patients at the expense of the poor frustrates Tenma. The guilt becomes too much for Tenma, and when given the choice between saving the life of a little boy or the mayor of Dusseldorf, he chooses the boy. The boy lives, but the mayor dies, along with Tenma’s reputation. Nine years pass and Tenma runs into a man killing one of Tenma’s criminal patients. That man’s name is Johan Liebert, and he was the boy Tenma saved all those years ago. Horrified at the monster he saved, Tenma swears to do everything he can to kill Liebert before he can take any more lives.
