Ulysses is one of the most iconic epics in all of literature. It chronicles a day in the life of three characters in Dublin Ireland from the morning of June 16th to the next day. This may not sound very grand or interesting, but it is the way Joyce tells his magnum opus that is unlike any other work of literature. In chapter fifteen, it reads like a stage play. Chapter thirteen feels like a corny romance novel. Chapter eleven abounds with techniques like onomatopoeia and alliteration to replicate music. It may sound like a bore, yet Ulysses is a hilarious read, with brilliant intellectual humor and dirty jokes that would make the most sophisticated reader blush. This is all done to imitate life itself. Whenever Ulysses faced criticism, Joyce would say, “If Ulysses isn’t worth reading, then life isn’t worth living.”
