In a world where the definition of manhood is becoming more and more blurred, we must have an obvious example of what real toxic masculinity looks like. Okonkwo is tormented by the actions of his cowardly father Unoka and swore that he would never appear weak to his fellow Umuofia tribesmen. To do this, Okonkwo takes pride in everything he does to where he will violently defend his honor and physically abuse his family if they do not meet his impossible standards. He also represses every emotion aside from anger to never appear weak or effeminate, which leads to his many emotional and childish decisions. Things Fall Apart reveals what happens when pride and fear of weakness overtake a man to where he becomes the very thing he swore to never become.
