There was a time between 2001 and 2015 when zombies ruled pop culture. One of the earliest and most beloved stories about the horrors of a zombie apocalypse is The Walking Dead. Deputy Rick Grimes wakes up from a coma in the hospital, but nobody was there. It’s only after he explores the town that he learns the dead outnumber the living. Now he must find his family and fight to survive in a cruel world. Most comic books about the zombie apocalypse featured larger-than-life heroes with big guns and bigger personalities. The Walking Dead was revolutionary for examining the long-term psychological stress and trauma of living in such an unforgiving world. It was also not afraid to kill characters or pull its punches.
