Many people do not know that there was a time when Marvel Comics was in serious trouble. Marvel’s sixty years of tangled continuity became off-putting for old readers and intimidating for new ones. Fans were also growing up and tired of reading the same tired plots that were geared towards younger readers. Marvel needed to shake things up if it wanted to survive. So they created Ultimate Marvel, a brand new continuity that would allow Marvel’s writers a chance to take a character and tell fresh stories with them. Mark Millar was given the Avengers and reimagined them as The Ultimates. The Ultimates were a tougher and more cynical interpretation of the iconic team to reflect the political climate of the time. The Ultimates was a massive success and laid the blueprint for what would become the Marvel Cinematic Universe
