The Tell-Tale Heart tells the story of an unnamed narrator that has murdered an old man. He insists he is not a madman, and did not commit the crime out of passion or for money. He confesses he is just a nervous man that is terrified by the old man’s pale blue “vulture-eye.” The narrator performs the perfect murder and hides the man’s body in pieces under the floorboards, but the thumping sound drives him mad. The Tell-Tale Heart has been subject to many interpretations for why the narrator committed the crime. Is it insanity? A Freudian desire to show power over a father figure? Beetles creating death watch? Perhaps the answer is that there is no answer, and the narrator commits the crime because of the sinful nature of man.
