In Salem, Massachusetts, Esther Prynne faces public humiliation for the sin of adultery. As punishment, she must bear a scarlet “A” for the rest of her life, but she refuses to reveal who the father of her daughter Pearl is. Esther’s husband, naming himself Roger Chillingworth, is determined to find the man who slept with his wife, so he may also face punishment. The Scarlet Letter examines the human condition and how we must treat those around us who have sinned. Is it hypocritical to shame those that have sinned when every man and woman has also sinned in their life? If everyone has sinned, should we not be empathetic instead of vindictive?
