Dmitri Gurov is a wealthy banker. He’s nearing his forties, has a family, and is not happy. He detests his quarrelsome wife and finds his life to be monotonous and empty. It is only after he meets a young woman named Anna walking by the Yalta seafront with her Pomeranian dog that color enters Dmitri’s life. Anna is also unhappily married, and the two find pleasure in each other’s company. Yet the more time they spend with each other, the more temptation whispers to break their vows. The Lady with Dog is an iconic short story that has received many interpretations over the years. Is Dmitri just a sleazy old man preying on this naïve young woman? Or is Dmitri desperate for conviction and finds emotional renewal with Anna? It is up to the reader to decide.
