Tom Jones is not Squire Allworthy’s son, but Allworthy found him in his bed as a baby. Tom became the son that Mr. Allworthy never had and had everything he could ever want, except for Sophia Western. It is only after Tom leaves the Allworthy estate and Sophia follows him to London that he has his chance if he can resist the charms of the local girls. The History of Tom Jones, A Foundling is a story of hypocrisy, deception, folly, virtue put to action, and the absurdity of stereotypical categorization. The novel has also attained a legacy as an ambitious masterpiece of comic writing in English literature.
