The Great Gatsby tells a story that many do not want to hear. A story that reveals that the American Dream is a nightmare. Nick Carraway meets the wealthy and infamous Jay Gatsby and becomes his “old sport.” Through Gatsby, Nick comes to understand that beneath the wealth and glamor of the “roaring twenties” is an obsession with the shallow, with no restraint or morality. Gatsby is seemingly great because he has everything, except the woman he loves. The Great Gatsby was not a success upon release, but has since become a contender for the greatest American novel of all time and has defined American culture.
