The Grapes of Wrath tells the story of Tom Joad and his family’s struggle to find work in California during the Great Depression. As they travel across the country, they face many hardships. These hardships come not from bad weather or the misfortunate of the situation, but from the people the Joad family encounters at every turn. The rich are desperate to maintain their positions of power and do everything they can to keep the poor in their place with low wages and filthy living conditions. Despite all stacked against them, the Joad family never surrenders their dignity and does everything they can to help those around them. The Grapes of Wrath tells a story of how even in times of crisis, selfishness and altruism destroys people while fellowship and sacrifice saves people in the end.
