Who would have thought that a mature book written for adults would become one of the most censored books in libraries and high schools in the United States? It’s almost as if Salinger wrote it for adults to reflect on their time as a teenager instead of for actual teenagers. Pencey Preparatory Academy has just kicked out Holden Caulfield for failing most of his classes except for English. He has no direction or purpose in his life and only knows that he does not want to grow up and become like the phony adults that surround him every day. The Catcher in the Rye is an honest and uncompromising look at growing up in a confusing and unforgiving world. Holden holds everything in disdain but cannot see past his bitterness to recognize his phoniness and inability to take control of his own life.
