Philip Marlowe is as tough, cynical, and genuine as private detectives come. On a rainy October morning, General Sternwood comes to Detective Marlowe with a request to deal with Arthur Geiger. Geiger has been blackmailing Sternwood with scandalous pictures of his daughter Carmen. Just as Marlowe takes the case, Sternwood mentions the disappearance of his beloved son-in-law Rusty Regan. What seems like a simple case becomes a slippery slope of double-crossing, secrets revealed, and murder or “sleeping the big sleep.” The Big Sleep came out during the Great Depression and it reflects the cynicism of the time with the depiction of a greedy and corrupt America.
