On the stroke of midnight, August 15, 1947, Saleem Sinai was born. What makes this ordinary birth significant is that at the same moment India, Saleem’s home country, declared its independence from Britain. There is also the fact that Saleem gained supernatural powers along with every other child born on the midnight of August 15. Saleem uses his telepathy and an enhanced sense of smell to find others like him and creates the Midnight’s Children’s Conference, which represents the inherent potential of diverse people coexisting in harmony together. Saleem’s life story contains many profound elements and ideas: the many and the single, how memory makes for an unreliable narrator, and the struggle between destruction and creation.
