Jean Valjean has just finished serving his nineteen years in prison and is desperate for help. All turn him away except for Bishop Myriel. In exchange for Myriel’s kindness, the police capture Valjean with stolen silverware. Before Valjean’s arrest, Myriel arrives and lies with the police that he gave Valjean the silverware. Myriel warns Valjean to leave the life of thievery behind. Valjean becomes an honest businessman and makes a promise to his friend Fantine to care for her daughter Cosette. This summary only scratches the surface of what Les Misérables is. It is a story of tragedy, sacrifice, and love. It is a universal story of hope in the face of injustice and receives many adaptations. The most iconic being the beloved musical.
