Jane Eyre is a fitting title, considering it chronicles the eponymous character’s life in five parts. It begins with Jane’s childhood at Gateshead and follows her life until she marries the man she loves. During her life, Jane constantly encounters adversity from her circumstances and those around her. All she desires is a place to call home and people that love her for who she is. Yet despite her dire situation, Jane never gives in to bitterness and loves those around her. Jane Eyre explores themes of love versus autonomy, what it means to be a woman in a patriarchal society, and finding the proper balance between religious faith and living a fulfilling life. Many consider Jane Eyre as one of the most iconic love stories in literature, rivaled only by Pride and Prejudice.
