In the year 1819, three peculiar tenants live in the same filthy boarding house by the Seine river. The first is Eugène de Rastignac, who eagerly desires to join the upper class. Vautrin is the second man, and he is as charming as he is disturbing. The last man is Père Goriot, who has gone bankrupt trying to support his two married daughters. These three men’s lives intermingle in a tale of corruption, murder, and broken family relations. Father Goriot is a novel steeped in realism, and critically examines the phenomenon of social stratification and the negative impact it had on Paris. Its influence on French literature is unrivaled and has been called “the keystone of the Comédie humaine.“
