Doctor Zhivago tells two stories. The first is the epic story of the people of Russia and the many tragedies they faced during the first half of the twentieth century. The second is the story of Yury Zhivago and the many complicated relationships he makes as he tries to survive a country torn by war. Both stories intermingle into a tale about marriage, religion, power, and madness. Doctor Zhivago was such a success that Pasternak received the Nobel Prize for Literature, an event that infuriated the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. The famous American author Edmund Wilson wrote, “Doctor Zhivago will, I believe, come to stand as one of the great events in man’s literary and moral history.”
