Imagine a world where the only requirement from the government was to live life to the fullest. In the World State, the government conditions children to value only drug-induced happiness, consuming products, and group orgies. It may sound like a utopian paradise, but John “The Savage” does not feel that way. John is an outsider from the Savage Reservation who recoils at the hollow pleasures of the World State and yearns for an authentic connection with another human being. Brave New World reveals how desperate people can become to avoid the hard truths of life for the sake of their comfort. It also shows how easily those in power can take away its citizen’s individuality and agency for fleeting pleasures.
