Sethe is a former slave who is trying her hardest to make a life for herself and her daughter Denver. Things become to look up for Sethe when her old friend Paul D comes back into her life. But he is not the only person who comes. A young woman named Beloved arrives and torments the residents of 124. Beloved is a story about chains and the memories they leave behind. It also explores how slavery can destroy someone’s identity, and how only the bonds of family and community can overcome the horrors and traumas of the past. Inspired by the tragic true story of Margaret Garner, Beloved is perhaps the most iconic and respected modern novel on slavery and the scars that it has left on American history.
