There was a time when comic books and superheroes were merely seen as entertainment for children. Even the boom of more relatable characters like Spider-Man and the X-Men could not shake the public perception of the campy stereotypes of Silver Age comics and Adam West’s Batman. The comic book medium needed to evolve and Frank Miller was the man for the job. Batman - The Dark Knight Returns is an Elseworld story that follows an old, bitter, and retired Bruce Wayne. He has not been Batman for ten years after the tragic death of Robin, but Gotham is on the brink of collapse and needs its dark knight to return.
