Andrei Rublev tells the story of the real-life Muscovite icon painter. As was typical for most Tarkovsky films, Andrei Rublev does not follow a typical film structure. Instead, it is told in a series of eight chapters that follow Andrei’s life. Usually, the focus is not even on Andrei, but on the significant historical events that he witnessed during his life. Tarkovsky uses the story of Andrei’s life as an artist to explore themes of artistic freedom, autodidacticism, and the experience of creating art during an oppressive regime. Though the Soviet Union banned it from release for its rebellious themes, Andrei Rublev has slowly earned recognition throughout the world it deserves as an example of a master filmmaker achieving his greatest potential.
