The imported cultural institutions of India in the British colonies disappoint Mrs. Moore, and Miss Adele Quested. They eagerly wish to experience the ‘real’ India, and Dr. Aziz is more than happy to oblige. He takes them to explore the Marabar Caves, and all goes well. Until Adela flees the caves and accuses Aziz of trying to rape her. This accusation throws Chandrapore into disorder as racial tension between the British and Indians boils to the surface. A Passage to India critiques the dynamic of India under British Colonial rule and the “muddle” that dynamically creates. It asks if friendship and cooperation are even possible between British and Indian people and explores the idea of unity between all living things and what that would mean.
