Many recognize Don Quixote as that silly story about the funny old man who thinks that he is a knight and attacks windmills that appear to him as giants. What they do not recognize is that Don Quixote is a founding work of western literature, considered the first example of the modern idea of the novel, and is one of the most translated works of literature in the world. Alonso Quixano is a retired countryman who becomes obsessed with stories of chivalrous knights. He convinces himself that those stories are true and creates a fantasy for himself and his faithful squire, Sancho Panza. It may sound comical, but Don Quixote explores themes of perspective, the incompatibility of traditional and modern values, and the difference between class and worth.
