Pan’s Labyrinth is the most beautiful nightmare you are likely to see. Ofelia’s pregnant mother has just married the ruthless Captain Vidal, and Ofelia hates him. He only married Ofelia’s mother to breed a son and has never felt so alone. It is only when she discovers a stick insect that turns into a fairy that Ophelia’s life changes forever. Part of what makes fantasy so special as a genre is its flexibility and the variety of films you could make. In this film, director Guillermo del Toro reimagines the traditional fairy tale film into a very dark experience. While the film has familiar elements like fauns and fairies, there are also some of the strangest and most surreal monsters ever put to film.
