Many people do not know that there was a time when Marvel Comics was in serious trouble. Marvel’s sixty years of tangled continuity became off-putting for old readers and intimidating for new ones. Fans were also growing up and tired of reading the same tired plots that were geared towards younger readers. Marvel needed to shake things up if it wanted to survive. So they created Ultimate Marvel, a brand new continuity that would allow Marvel’s writers a chance to take a character and tell fresh stories with them. While Ultimate Marvel has its highs and lows, the crowning achievement of this idea was Ultimate Spider-Man. Ultimate Spider-Man retells the story of Peter Parker from the perspective Brian Michael Bendis. The original Peter Parker had suffered mischaracterization since his story was being told by different writers. The Peter of Ultimate Spider-Man never had this problem and remains one of the definitive interpretations of the character.
