Isabel Archer is a bright, spirited, slightly narcissistic young woman who intimidates most men. Only a few men are brave enough to court her, but Isabel fears that marriage would compromise her desire for independence. In the end, Isabel chooses Gilbert Osmond but realizes he views her as an object instead of a person. Isabel must now choose between staying faithful to her uncaring husband or leaving him to regain her lost independence. The Portrait of a Lady provides a thorough examination of Isabel’s psychology to understand her thought process and how her upbringing made her the woman she is today. Isabel’s story questions the conflict between conforming to social expectations and maintaining independence.
