Don’t you just hate it when you wake up one day and discover you have become an enormous insect? That’s life for you, right? The Metamorphosis tells the story of Gregor Samsa who wakes up to discover he has become a disgusting cockroach creature. Yet that is not what frightens Gregor. He is much more concerned about how he will go to work to provide for his family. Gregor’s family has always relied on him to make a living and now they must make the money and take care of him, which puts a burden on the Samsa family. What sounds like a silly premise becomes a haunting story of alienation, the limits of sympathy, and the absurdity of life itself. The Metamorphosis identifies as one of the seminal short stories and Elias Canetti identified it as “One of the few great and perfect works of the poetic imagination written during this century”.
