Hans Castorp goes to pay a visit to his tubercular cousin Joachim Ziemssen in a sanatorium high up in the Swiss Alps. As he makes his way, Castorp’s health fails and delays his arrival. When he finally arrives the chief doctor Hofrat Behrens diagnosed Castorp with tuberculosis. As Castorp remains in the sanatorium until he feels better, he meets various characters who represent a miniature example of Europe a few years before the First World War. The Magic Mountain is about the development of a “simple, young man” amidst a nation that is spiritually ill and headed for war. It explores themes about life and death and the subjective experience of time from our perspective.
