Sons and Lovers is the fictionalized autobiography of D. H. Lawrence. It tells the story of Gertrude and her tumultuous relationships with her sons. After her favorite son William dies, Gertrude becomes very close with her second son, Paul. All is well until Paul falls in love with a girl named Miriam, which puts a strain on his relationship with his mother. Sons and Lovers explores relationships and the strain they can put on people. Paul develops a kind of Oedipus complex with his mother, and the effects on his personal life are devastating. It also explores the idea of free will or lack thereof in marriage.
