On the Road is the autobiographical work of Jack Kerouac, with fictional stand-ins for himself and his friends. Sal Paradise meets the reckless and free-spirited Dean Moriarty and the two become fast friends. Dean is a source of inspiration for Sal and their relationship sparks a burning desire within Sal to go out and experience the freedom of the open road. The two friends begin a three-year journey across America that contains memorable characters, various landscapes, interpersonal dramas, and emotional development. On the Road is a story about America and its culture. The New York Times hailed the book on release as “The most beautifully executed, the clearest and the most important utterance yet made by the generation Kerouac himself named years ago as ‘beat,’ and whose principal avatar he is.”
