“Call me Ishmael,” is one of the most famous opening lines in literature, and for good reason. Moby Dick tells the story of Ishmael and the mad sea captain Ahab’s obsession with slaying the great white whale that took his leg. It sounds like the plot of a novella, but Moby Dick is so much more than that. It is an epic tale that falls into the realm of legend. Ahab’s mad quest is shown from Ishmael’s perspective to reveal a universe filled with memorable characters and fascinating stories. It reads like a story that sailors would tell each other in a grimy tavern. Moby Dick has been hailed as “the greatest novel in American literature” by Elizabeth Hardwick and considering its unrivaled impact and legacy, it is hard to not agree.
