Heart of Darkness is one of the most controversial and debated novellas in literary history. A sailor named Charles Marlow recounts his journey deep into the center of Africa. During his journey, he encounters the darkest side of humanity in the form of The Company and Kurtz. The Company represents the inherent hypocrisy and malicious intent of imperialism while Kurtz embodies the madness and malevolence of a man that is no longer bound by authority or societal restraint. Above all, Heart of Darkness is a story about how the Western Hemisphere became hollow and ambivalent to the suffering of others in exchange for conquering the world. Perhaps the real reason it is so controversial is that readers cannot accept the horror of humanity that Heart of Darkness reveals.
