Victor Frankenstein has mastered all forms of modern science taught at the University of Ingolstadt. With his newfound knowledge, which he calls “natural philosophy”, he aims to discover “the secret of life” for no other reason than for the sake of it. The result of his experiments is a creature that is alive and monstrous. His creation horrifies Victor, and he abandons it to roam the world alone. Frankenstein explores the idea of a man trying to play god and the price he will pay for his ambition. By the end of the novel, it is difficult to determine who is actually the monster. Victor and the wider world treat his creation with nothing but scorn and alienation, so the monster retaliates with violence and rage. It is a tragic tale that reveals how hate can create more despair than one could imagine.
