David Copperfield is a story about an orphaned little boy who struggles to survive in a cruel and uncaring world. Many kinds of people come and go during David’s life. Some help him, and some hurt him, but none of them can stop David from making the most out of his life one day at a time. David Copperfield’s journey mirrors that of Charles Dickens. Dickens uses David’s story and his own life experiences to expose how poorly those in power treated orphans, women, and the mentally disabled. Dickens also examines the wealthy and upper class to reveal that not every rich man is honorable and not every poor man is a sinner. Scholars and readers cite David Copperfield as Dicken’s masterpiece, who himself called it “his favorite child.”
