Joe Simon and Jack Kirby created Captain America during a simpler time. A time when American soldiers needed a fantasy to inspire them to continue their fight against the Axis powers. Times have changed since then, and Captain America has changed as well. Ed Brubaker’s run on Captain America is one of the most iconic and beloved runs in comic book history. It dared to challenge the legacy of Steve Rogers and examine the sins of America’s overly idealized past during World War II. It is best remembered for retconning the death of Steve’s best friend, Bucky Barnes. He never died, but became the infamous Winter Soldier and Steve’s deadliest enemy.
