In 1961, Marvel Comics was dominating the comic book genre with Stan Lee’s The Fantastic Four. Lee wanted to create more human characters with relatable problems that the Fantastic Four dealt with, but for a teenage audience. He convinced Marvel’s publisher, Martin Goodman, to use the last issue of the unpopular series Amazing Fantasy to feature his new character, Spider-Man. To the shock of everyone except Lee, the Spider-Man issue of Amazing Fantasy brought in unprecedented sales figures. Spider-Man was here to stay, and he’s never left since. Millions of teenagers and adults identified with Peter Parker and his bittersweet story of love, loss, relationship troubles, financial woes, power, and responsibility. Some of the most iconic Spider-Man moments come from Lee and Ditko’s run that have become ingrained in comic book history and pop culture.
