Going against his family’s wishes, Robinson Crusoe takes on the life of a sailor. Things go well for Robinson until he faces being marooned on an island off the coast of Trinidad. All alone, Robinson must survive on an island filled with wild animals and insatiable cannibals. There are many profound ideas explored in a simple survival story. What it means to master oneself and the surrounding world, how important it is to maintain self-awareness in an unfamiliar environment, and recognizing past sins to seek repentance. Robinson Crusoe is one of if not the most iconic adventure novel. Many scholars declare it to be the first English novel ever written.
