On the surface, One Piece is a seemingly simple story. Monkey D. Luffy is a young man made of rubber that wants to become a great pirate like his friend Shanks. So he sets out on his little boat to find a crew to help him discover the One Piece, a legendary pirate treasure, and become the King of the Pirates. What starts as a simple and lighthearted adventure becomes a world-spanning war between the most powerful and fearsome pirates, navy commanders, warriors, and monsters. Luffy and his friends encounter some of the most bizarre and tragic characters and places in one of the most detailed fictional worlds of all time. One Piece is a story with layer upon layer of themes about dreams, loss, friendship, and how greed is almost always the motivation behind war and genocide.
